Quick Snips – April 2011<< Back to Blog
There sure has been a lot going on this year with floods across the country and disasters across the world so you can be excused for thinking that you might have missed the first three months of 2011. There definitely is a feeling with many people that they have missed out on any sort of break over summer so the good news is that the planets have aligned for April to give us all the chance of a decent catch up holiday.
The Easter weekend itself includes ANZAC day this year giving many people the chance of a rare 5 day weekend. School holidays are spread out between the different states plus private and public schools are also spread over the first three weeks of April so there should be no excuses for not getting some beach time in before winter hits us this year. Because the start to the year has been so wet, local accommodation and tourism operators are putting out some very attractively priced offers to entice us all back for a holiday during April.
Anyone that has had the chance to be here during March has had the chance to enjoy some particularly good end of summer days with the beaches in exceptional condition and the water still very clear, clean and comfortable at around 25 degrees. If you need more encouragement then the fish have also been biting and the surf has been the best of 2011. I hope that gives you all the incentive you need to take a break here during April.
An update on the Marcoola business front should read, out with the old and in with the new. After 24 years in the Marcoola Min Mart, Kevin & Cheryl Blacklaw have sold and will be out by the end of April. Never short of a friendly smile, Kevin and Cheryl have been a cornerstone business in the area and have seen a lot of changes in the 24 years that they have been here. Kevin has also been the main driver in creating the North Shore Traders Association and their contributions and also their presence in the local community will be missed.
On a very bright note we can welcome Sunshine Aviation Flying Services to our local business community. Peter Thomas purchased the business which operated from the airport late last year and has moved his office to just next to the Bendigo Bank at Marcoola to generate some greater public awareness of his services. Peter offers joy lights from Sunshine Coast Airport for up to 5 people at a time.
We had our belated staff Xmas Party recently and enjoyed an afternoon of joy flights around the Coast and you can be sure that this is a very special way to appreciate the beauty of where we live. Peter also offers a day trip to Fraser Island where they will fly you to the island to then be picked up and driven to as many sights as you want to see. If you do make it here anytime soon this is one way to spend a day that we can really recommend. The Horton Park Golf Club saga continues.
The members have voted to sell the golf club to the council for $39,000,000 however there is still no agreement on what to do from there. A majority of members are in favour of buying Twin Waters Golf Course but not a big enough majority to allow it to happen. The only alternatives are to build a new course at Kunda Park (Maroochydore) or on cane land bordering the northern side of the Maroochy River between Bli Bli and the Motorway.
Although it has nothing to do with me, I think a new golf course featuring our side of the Maroochy River would be sensational. The new North Shore Community Centre suffered a setback this month with an industrial accident shutting the site down for a couple of weeks. We understand that all involved are OK and construction is still on course for completion by mid year. Lots of building activity going on around Coolum. The new shopping centre being built behind the Birtwill Street shops is well under way and looks to be on track for completion mid year.
This will unfortunately also be around the time that IGA Coolum will be closing their doors as Coles will be opening their new supermarket in the new buildings. Other rumoured tenancies for the new shops include a bank and chicken shop at this stage. We also mentioned last month that the new toilet block in Tickle Park was starting. This is now well underway and should improve the aesthetics of the park.
