Quick Snips November 2011<< Back to Blog
Does anyone else know what happened to the rest of 2011? Thankfully for most people it will be good to see this year finished so we can have a fresh start next year but on a positive note there does seem to be a turnaround in activity and confidence generally. There are more people out in the shops and restaurants again, the beaches are packed & the holiday market seems to have come back to life. Forward bookings over the next 3 months are looking very good and our two sales offices have put in their strongest monthly results in 18 months. It is nowhere near as strong as we had become accustomed to in previous years but it is a lot better than we have seen in the last 12 months. Fingers crossed that we keep it going from here.
Two big events in November should help keep up the momentum. First up the PGA at the Hyatt from November 24 -27. Thanks to the Presidents Cup being held in Melbourne the week before we will see the best field likely to assemble ever in Coolum. The lineup could do justice to just about any tournament anywhere in the world. Greg Norman, Jason Day, Bubba Watson, Adam Scott, Darren Clarke, YE Yang, Rickie Fowler, Robert Allenby, Geoff Ogilvie, Aaron Baddeley, John Senden. It will be a tough call to know which ones to follow around because they will all be great to watch in action. To top things off, as a celebration of the PGA’s 100th birthday celebrations the entry tickets will be free for the Saturday.
The weekend of the 19-20 November will also see the second Golden Days Festival in Coolum. The two day festival will focus on music on the Saturday featuring Xavier Rudd, The Cruel Sea and The Beautiful Girls. Sundays activities will feature lots of surf, skate and family friendly events. If you can’t make it to either of these for any reason just make sure you tell someone else. It’s going to be big.
A number of roadwork projects around Coolum and the North Shore have commenced or are about to happen. Construction of a roundabout at Rex Terrace and David Low Way Marcoola has begun and will hopefully be completed prior to Christmas. This is the First Stage of the street scaping project along the Marcoola commercial strip. The first of Coolums new roundabouts is underway at the intersection of Birtwill St and the David Low Way. This needs some traffic diversion whilst the work is being done and should also be completed prior to Christmas. Finally the intersection of Coolum-Yandina Road and Central Avenue will have traffic lights installed by the end of November. Anyone that has ever tried to negotiate that intersection in busy traffic will appreciate these.
The proposed new development of the current Coolum Hotel site and adjoining vacant land on the corner of Birtwill Street and The David Low Way is now open for public discussion. The application is to build a new retail, accommodation and hotel complex including 39 motel units and a Dan Murphys Liquor Store. The proposal is huge and you can be sure there will be plenty of things discussed. If anyone wants to look at the proposal or make comment visit PD online at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au .
The upgrade of the Sunshine Coast Airport received a boost when it was declared a significant project by the coordinator general. Whilst that doesn’t guarantee the project will go ahead it does clear the way for a full assessment of the project through an Environment Impact Statement process. If everything goes to plan, construction of the new runway can still commence by 2014.
