Quick Snips January 2016<< Back to Blog
Ok so that’s 2015 done and dusted. December has been a nice way to finish off the year with some really nice beach weather and small but fun surf. As you would expect the Christmas week exploded with people so it has been a nice way to show off everything that we know is good about the Coast and best of all we still have the best part of another four weeks of school holidays to go. It has all of the hallmarks of a very strong kick start for 2016.
I am sure that I have mentioned it previously but 2016 is being touted as the year of the Sunshine Coast and for a number of reasons. First up we are about to enter the biggest year for sporting events on the Coast ever. The major events coming our way in 2016 will feature the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships which will be the first time they have been held here since 1980 back when Grant Kenny won the junior and senior ironman titles in the same year. This will be in April (just after Easter) and will be a major opportunity to showcase the Coast to a national audience. Also coming our way will be the World Outrigger Championships, the World 70.3 Ironman championships and the Police & Emergency Services Australasian Games. Each one of these events are a drawcard in their own right but to have all four events on the Sunshine Coast in the same year is a major coup and there will be no excuses if this isn't one of the biggest years in a long time for holiday accommodation occupancies.
Then on the business front we have the long awaited opening of the new Sunshine Coast Hospital scheduled for November 2016. I have been highlighting this for a number of years now but it is finally on our doorstep. 4000 direct medical industry jobs are attached to the opening of the hospital as well as a huge increase in ancillary services generating from this precinct. It will be a major game changer for the Sunshine Coast not just for employment opportunities but also for increasing residential and commercial demand for property. The number of doctors coming through open homes already is evidence of what we can expect to keep seeing from here. The new CBD redevelopment in Maroochydore should also start kicking in to gear from here with some major announcements to start coming out soon.
Also in 2016 we will have Council elections as well as a federal election. Who knows but it is not impossible that we might get the trifecta in 2016 and throw in a state election as well. It would be ideal if we could get them all over and done with at once and it would also be to everyone’s benefit if we managed to get some semblance of consistency in direction from here. It would also be nice if we could leave the rubbish that we have had to deal with at all levels of government over the last years in our past and focus positively on what looks to me like a pretty good run coming our way over this upcoming economic cycle. I keep saying that it finally feels like it is our turn on the Sunshine Coast to be the centre of attention again so lets keep it that way and let the good times roll.
We have now come to the end of our celebrations for our 20 years in business. Thanks you to all of you that have supported us throughout this time and also to all of our friends that have worked with us during this time to get us all here still in one piece. Best wishes for a prosperous 2016 and look forward to catching up again.
